Fresh Eggs: How to Identify Quality

Shell Appearance: Fresh eggs have clean, uncracked shells. Avoid eggs with stains or cracks, as they may indicate age or damage.

Shell Texture: Gently feel the eggshell. Fresh eggs have a smooth and slightly chalky texture, while older eggs may feel slimy or rough.

Egg White: Crack open the egg and inspect the egg white. Fresh egg whites should be clear and thick, with minimal spreading.

Egg Yolk: A fresh egg yolk should be round and firm, sitting high in the center of the egg. Avoid eggs with flat or runny yolks.

Odor: Fresh eggs have little to no odor. If you detect a strong or unpleasant smell when cracking the egg, it may be past its prime.

Float Test: Place the egg in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs will sink and lay flat on the bottom, while older eggs may float or tilt upwards.

Date Stamp: Check the expiration or "sell by" date on the egg carton. Choose eggs with the furthest date for the freshest option.
