What to look for and how to react

Shy as they are, groundhogs tend to retreat into their burrows when they sense danger, so spotting a groundhog takes observation and patience

There are a few things to look out for if you suspect that a groundhog has made your yard their home.

Physical Attributes: Groundhogs are part of the rodent family with stout bodies and short legs.

They are about 16 to 20 inches in length, with bushy tails measuring 4 to 7 inches, short ears, and sharp claws.

Habitat: Groundhogs thrive in open areas near woodlands, fields, or gardens.

They prefer areas with ample vegetation for foraging and digging burrows, and can even be found along roads, streams, and forest edges.

Behavior: Groundhogs are most active during the day, making it easier to spot them.
